- Entered the Eisenach Lateinschule.
- 1694
- Along with brother Johann Jakob is sent to live in Ohrdruf with their eldest brother
Johann Christoph after their father Johann Ambrosius dies.
- 1700
- Moves to Lüneberg due to crowding in brother's family.
- 1703
- Organist Neukirche (Bonifaciuskirche?) in Arnstadt. Events include
being reprimanded for insulting the bassoonist Geyersbach and
for inviting a lady up to the choir loft.
(He said it was to rehearse... I've heard that story before.)
- 1705
- Travels to Lübeck to see the great Dietrich Buxtehude.
- 1707
- Organist at St. Blasiuskirche, Mühlhausen. Marries Maria barbara Bach.
- 1708
- Court Organist for Duke Wilhelm Ernst at Weimar.
- 1714
- Also becomes Konzertmeister at Weimar
- 1717
- Kapellmeister for the Calvanist Prince Leopold at Cöthen.
- 1719
- Meets the Margrave of Brandenburg on a trip to Berlin. The Brandenburg Concertos
are given two years later.
- 1720
- Wife Maria Barbara dies.
- 1721
- Marries Anna Magdalena. Prince Leopolds marriage to the music hating
Friderica Henrietta von Anhalt-Bernburg causes Bach to start shopping
around for a new job.
- 1723
- Telemann's inability to take the job as Kantor of Leipzig
causes it to pass on to Bach.
- 1729-41
- Adds Director of the Collegium musicum to his work load.
- 1747
- Visits his son C.P.E. at Potsdam where he was chamber musician to Frederick II
- 1749
- Becomes ill and nearly blind.
